Stampin' Up!© Give It A Whirl Ice Cream Corner

Ice Cream Corner Suite from the January-June Mini Catalog.  See HERE.

The 2021 Jan-June Mini Catalog - just a week and a half left to order from this Mini.  One of the fun Suites that you find there, retiring June 30, is Ice Cream Corner Suite.  Now's the perfect time to create projects with the ice cream stamp images, cone, Ice Cream Cone Builder Punch, popsicles, sprinkles embellishments, wonderfully bright Designer Series Papers (DSP), etc.  But note:   Available only till 6/30/21 or while supplies last.

I'm sharing a fun interactive card using this Ice Cram Corner Suite of products.  The card uses the Give It A Whirl Dies from the Annual Catalog.  This is one of my favorite dies to craft with.  My card was inspired by Vy Tran's cards, and uses the Window Sheets (clear mylar sheets) Item #142314, for the wheel.

I'll take you through the steps I did to make this card.  I have lots of pictures to share with you, so I hope you'll follow along.

Card Base & Die Cutting

Card base is Cinnamon Cider card stock, 8 1/2" x 5 1/2", score & fold at 4 1/4".  Using the Give It A Whirl Dies, cut 2 panels from Basic White CS.

Cut the top off one of the panels - make your cut 1/2" above the hole - that gives a larger bottom piece approximately 3 5/8".

Cut another panel using the die and a piece of the Ice Cream Corner DSP.  Then also cut the top off of this panel.  It's the bottom half of the DSP that will be glued to the same-size white panel in a step to come (not yet).

These are the pieces for the card base, and the front of the card.
For now, set the Cinnamon Cider base aside.

Use the Give It A Whirl Dies - the Wheel Die - and cut a wheel out of a Window Sheet.  I put the window sheet on top of a piece of printer paper before running it through the die cutting machine to protect the window sheet from all the grooves that are in my well-used cutting plate.  You want to end up with a very clear wheel (no groove lines or other defects).  Then set it aside.

Stamping, punching & building the ice cream

Now, time to do the stamping and punching of ice cream scoops & cone.  Use the Sweet Ice Cream stamp set and Ice Cream Cone Builder Punch for this.  Use Basic White CS and ink pads in, really, any colors you choose. (what's your favorite ice cream flavor?)
You will want 6 scoops of ice cream images.  Don't forget the sprinkles!
The inks I used are:  Pale Papaya, Fresh Freesia, Granny Apple Green, Polished Pink, Bermuda Bay, and Soft Suede (for the "chocolate" scoop).

Stamp the "Happy Birthday" in Polished Pink at the top of the large panel of Basic White.
Stamp the ice cream scoop images and sprinkles in various colors and punch them out with the Ice Cream Cone Builder Punch.  Also punch one Cone from a piece of the DSP.

Scoops of ice cream that are punched out; panel with the Happy Birthday sentiment.

Inks & Ice Cream Cone Builder Punch for the scoops & cone.

Assemble the front DSP half-panel:
It will look like this:

  • Glue the previously die-cut DSP to the previously cut White CS half-panel.
  • Choose which ice cream scoops you want on the front.  Three go on the front.  (Then the remaining 3 will go on the wheel.  In another step, below.)
  • Cut a 2 1/2" circle out of Ombre Specialty Paper.  (Item 155784 in Annual Catalog).
  • Glue the cone and 3 scoops of ice cream to the 2 1/2" circle, being sure to check the placement so that when it is glued to the panel, the top scoop overlaps the little hole at the center edge.  (The hole was formed when the pieces are die-cut.)
  • Glue the circle+cone+scoops to the front panel - do NOT put glue on the very top edge of the top scoop (the pink one in my picture), where it overlaps the panel.
Next:  The Wheel mechanism assembly
  • Adding the scoops to the wheel - start with just placement before adhering:
    • Position (but don't adhere, yet) the window-sheet wheel over the large Happy Birthday panel, lining up the little holes.
    • Place the scoops, without adhering them down yet, around the wheel, checking that they won't overlap the notch on the right-hand side when the wheel is turned.
    • In essence, the top edge of each scoop will be approximately 1/4" from the outer border of the wheel.
    • Once you've got them in place, use Mini Glue Dots (Item #103683) to adhere each scoop to the Wheel.  I used two on each scoop - one near the leading edge (as the wheel turns) and the other on the trailing edge.  (glue dots work best; liquid glue slides on the window-sheet)

Placement of Mini Dots on the back of each ice cream scoop.

Scoops are approx. 1/4" in from the wheel edge, and not overlapping into the Notch space.

When all the scoops are adhered, use a small brad to attach the wheel to the panel, as seen in the picture above.  Fix the brad loosely, so the wheel will turn.

OK.  Here are the pieces for the card front so far:

Time to put it all together.  I used Foam Adhesive Sheets (Item #152815) to adhere the panels to the card base, creating space between layers & allowing the wheel to spin.

This is how it is done:

Turn over the large panel (the Happy Birthday Panel) that has the window-sheet wheel (with scoops) attached.
On the back, cut up Foam Sheets and add strips & pieces around the edges.  Don't get too close to the brad - it needs space to spin.

Remove backing from the foam, turn the panel back over to the front, and adhere it to the Cinnamon Cider card base.

Next, the half-panel with the ice cream cone - turn it over to add Foam Strips in a similar way.  NOTE:  place the wheel die as a visual guide so you will know where to stay free of placing foam - you need to give the Window Sheet wheel space to turn.  The die wheel here is just placed as a guide.

After you've adhered the foam strips, (remove wheel die), flip the panel over and adhere to the card front, lining up the notch & bottom & side edges to the Happy Birthday Panel.

That's it!  Check that the wheel turns.  You can add the little directional arrow -  cut it in white CS using the die in Give It A Whirl Dies.

There are so many ways to use this set of dies, to create fun, interactive cards for kids and adults alike!  I hope you found some inspiration here, today.  Are you ready to give it a try (or should I say, give it a whirl?!)?

Let me know if you have any questions or if I can help in any way with your crafting projects.  If you love these Ice Cream products, remember - only available until June 30, or while supplies last.
