Coloring Techniques

There are so many different ways to color your stamped images using various Stampin' Up! products.  Let's look at just a few today.

Stampin' Up! products that you can use to color include:
  • Ink Pads (pp. 162-164 AC)
  • Aqua Painters (item 103954)
  • Blender Pens (102845)
  • Water Color Pencils (items 141709, 149014)
  • Stampin' Blends (p.179 AC)
1) BLENDER PEN and Classic Ink Pad Technique
Stamp your image using Memento Tuxedo Black ink. I used the Welcome Easter stamp set (151559).

Choose an ink pad in the color of your choice.  Before opening the pad, squeeze the lid & pad.  This will deposit ink on the inside of the lid.  You will see this when you now open the ink pad - a "puddle" of ink will be deposited inside the lid.
Use this as your "paint palette."   Dip the tip of the Blender Pen into the ink, and color in your image.  Close ink pad & squeeze again as you need more color.  Continue coloring.

2) AQUA PAINTER and Classic Ink Pad Technique
The Aqua Painter - These come in a pack of two, 1 medium brush tip, 1 large tip.  The barrel unscrews and you fill with water.  (Use Fluid 100 Watercolor Paper or Shimmery White Cardstock for best results; but can be used with regular cardstock if you don't use too much water when coloring your image)

Stamp image (again, from Welcome Easter stamp set) with STAZON INK.  (StazOn ink will not bleed when you are watercoloring.)

Again, squeeze the Classic Ink Pad to deposit ink onto the inside of the lid; open lid, and dip the tip of the Aqua Painter into the ink.  You vary how much water in your watercoloring you want by gently squeezing the barrel of the Aqua Painter.  (You can even use the Aqua Painter as a dry brush; just don't add water to barrel.)

I suggest you practice a little on a scrap of cardstock to get the feel of this technique, before you work on your actual project.  I also keep a pad of paper towel handy to blot the brush tip if I get too much water coming out of the barrel.

3) WATERCOLOR PENCILS and Blender Pens
Stamp image (this one is from Fable Friends stamp set, 148670) with Memento or Classic Ink.

You can color the image in entirely with the Watercolor Pencils (the squirrel's jacket).  Or, you can color portions of the image and then blend the color using the Blender Pen (the petals on the flower).

Cross-hatching with the pencil, then blending with Blender Pen also works nicely (body of squirrel).

Finished card:
Mint Macaron base, layer of Ornate Garden Specialty DSP, Stitched Shapes dies (circle), Painted Label dies (cut out in Early Espresso cardstock).  "Happy Spring" from Fable Friends set, in Early Espresso ink.

These are just a few ways to use coloring products in making your cards.  I hope you will try them!
