A Swingin' Whale of A Time!

Whale Hi there!
I'm so glad you stopped by my blog.  Today I want to share with you how I created a Swing-Tent Card.

I first learned how to make this type of card from another Demonstrator in our groups' Vacation Stampin' Camp.  Her name is Jessica Ingold.  Thanks, Jessica!

I love making these cards that have some movement!  The technique lends itself to many possibilities.  I look forward to seeing what YOU create.  Share your cards on my business Face Book Page, Juliepetriecrafts.

Using the Whale of a Time Suite, I made two different cards.  Which is your favorite?  Whale, or Turtle?

Let's get started.  We'll be making the whale card today.

Today I'm using products from the adorable Whale of a Time Suite.  You really need to see the cute Designer Series Papers in person to appreciate how special they are!  I'm using the paper as well as the Whale Done stamp set and coordinating punch.  All the products and their item numbers will be listed at the end of this post, for those who would like to order them.

1.   Start by cutting the pieces you will need:

CARD BASE:  Calypso Coral 4 1/4" x 11"; score/fold at 5 1/2"
DSP layer on front:  5 3/8" x 4 1/8"
DSP inside card:  5" x 3 3/4"
White card stock for back of card (where you can stamp sentiment or write): 5" x 3 3/4.
Swing mechanism: cut a piece of Calypso 2" x 1/2"; fold in half (1"), and fold down flaps. Punch small hole.  (see photo below)
Bottom "stand" piece of Calypso: 4 1/4" x 3"; score at 1/2", 1 1/2", 2 1/2"
Piece of Window Sheet:  3" x 1/2"; punch a hole near one end.

2.  Adhere the front DSP panel - I used Multipurpose liquid glue.
After this is adhered, use a circle die (approx. 3") to cut through both thicknesses.
3.  Prepare the foot and the swing mechanisms.
Foot:  fold on all the score lines, making a hill and valleys.  Use a piece of tear & tape on the narrower sections.
Swing Mechanism:  also put small piece of tear & tape on the flaps.

4.  Swing Mechanism - inside the card, on the fold of the card base, mark the center (2 1/8");  this is where you will adhere the swing.   Remove tear & tape and stick the swing, right on the fold of the card, one flap to the inside of top of card, one flap to the bottom.

Adding the window sheet strip - this is what the whale will attach to and allow it to "swing."
Use a small brad - attach the window sheet to the swing piece, through the holes in both the window sheet and the swing.  Don't press the brad prongs tight; leave a little "wiggle room" or the swing won't swing.

5.  Adhere foot, just to the inside bottom of the card.  The top of the card will be adhered in a later step.
Remove tear & tape from just one of the sides of the foot.  Adhere to the inside, bottom of card, having the "mountain" up and "valleys" down.  One of the valley folds will be flush with the bottom edge of the base.

6.  Add inside panel of DSP.  You want to add this layer before closing the top of the card.
Using Multipurpose glue, adhere the piece, placing it just covering up the seam of the "foot" and the seam of the swing mechanism.
This is a good time to adhere the back, outside panel, if you want.  (It can be done at the very end too.)  The sentiment and coral and fish images are included in the Whale Done stamp set. Inks are Pacific Point and Calypso Coral.  Stamp onto white 5" x 3 3/4".  See the back of the card, in the picture below.

7.  Finish the Foot.  NOW we can close the card.
Remove tear & tape from the 2nd "valley" on the foot piece, and close down the card front onto it, carefully aligning card bottom edges.  The card should now stand up.

8.  Time to add the whale.
Stamp whale image in Pacific Point ink onto white card stock.  Punch it out with the coordinating punch.  Also punch a 2nd whale, just out of white CS.  Adhere the two together.  This just makes a stronger whale, and adds some weight to the whale, which helps it swing better.

9.  Adding whale to the swing.
Figure out the whale placement before adhering to the swing/window sheet.  Center the whale in the circle opening & determine where you want it, so it can be seen.  Put a small piece of tear &  tape on the strip of window sheet, and then adhere the whale image to the swing.

10.  Extra:   Using some of the new Rainbow Glimmer Paper, I punched the spray coming out of the whale's spout.  You could use any glimmer paper you have, or even a contrasting card stock.  This is optional.

  11.  Decorate the front any way you'd like, depending on the occasion of your card.   I stamped the sentiment for the Whale Done set, "you're kind of a Big Deal" in Pacific Point ink, and cut with a layered square die, backed with a piece of Pacific Point card stock that I free-hand cut.  This I adhered to the front using a dimensional.

Here are some other swing cards I've made, to give you more ideas.  But I'm sure you can think of many of your own.  I'd love to see them!
This uses the same set of DSP as the Whale card.  Didn't I tell you these papers are the cutest!!?  In this one I fussy cut the turtle and cut a couple die pieces to mount him on.  I fussy cut another turtle, and adhered to the front of the card. The sentiment was stamped from the set Hand-Drawn Blooms, and cut with the coordinating die.  I liked the curve of it, for this card.  Some sequins from the Suite were added.

********************************************

I needed a new-baby card, so I made this one, with the carriage as the swinging piece.  It uses retired papers and stamp set.  But you can see the versatility of this card technique.

*******************************************************

One more, with a tag used as the swing image - just endless possibilities.  The tag had been sent to me on a package - it's made by another Demonstrator friend, Meg Loven.  I put it inside this gingham card that I made with the retired color, Grapefruit Grove.

I hope you found some inspiration here today.  This card technique is such fun to make, and I know your friends and family would love to receive one, made specially by you.  It stands so nicely, to be viewed and enjoyed on a mantle or table or desk...  Give it a try!!   Let me know if you have any questions.

Cute Fruit

I have had fun creating cards with the Cute Fruit stamps.  Take a look!

This stamp set is in the Beginner Brochure - you can view the PDF on the right-hand column.  If you would like a Brochure, let me know & I'll drop one in the mail to you.

The stamping on these cards ranges from quick, easy stamping, to ideas for stepping them up.
So, whether you're new to stamping or have been doing it a while, I think you will have fun using these stamps.

For the first card:

Card base: whisper white card stock, 11" x 4 1/4", folded at 5 1/2"
Layer piece:  Playing with Patterns DSP (152490) - 5 1/4 x 4"
Stamp the melon image with Magenta Madness and Just Jade onto white, 3 x 2 1/4"
Adhere to a piece of Magenta Madness card stock, 3 1/8 x 2 3/8".
Use Stampin' Deminsionals to adhere the image piece to card base.

********************************

2nd card, using the same melon image, but stepping it up a bit:

Card base:  white card stock, 11" x 4 1/4", folded at 5 1/2".
Patterned paper: In Color 6" x 6" paper pack (153070) - 4 1/2" x 3 1/4"
Image on white, 2" x 2 3/4";  stamp melon with Magenta Madness & Just Jade ink; stamp smiley face and the "smile" in Memento Tuxedo black.  I used a black Sharpie pen to draw the jazz hands.
Banner: Just Jade, die-cut with Tasteful Labels Dies (152886), but can also be free-handed cut, using a piece 1 1/2" x 7/8" and cut out the "V".  Cut a piece of Magenta card stock just slightly larger; adhere together using Multipurpose Liquid Glue.

******************************

Next, on to the pineapple image:

Card base - same as the other two.
Layers:  Playing with Patterns DSP (152490) - 5 1/4" x 4"
              Granny Apple Green card stock - 3 1/2 x 2 1/8
               White card stock - 3 3/8 x 2.
Scrap of white to stamp & die-cut.
Stamp pineapple with Daffodil Delight and Granny Apple Green ink.  Stamp smiley face with Tuxedo Black Memento.  Draw hands & feet with Sharpie or other black marker of your choice.
Sentiment: stamp in Granny Apple Green onto white; die-cut with Tasteful Labels Dies.  Sentiment piece is popped up with Stampin' Dimensionals.  Other elements are glued with Multipurpose glue.

******************************

For this final card, I also used another stamp set:  Jar of Flowers (152515) and coordinating punch (152703) - available as a BUNDLE, saving you 10%.  Bundle item is 154064

Card base:  Whisper white card stock, 8 1/2" x 5 1/2", folded at 4 1/4"
Layer:  whisper white, 5 1/4 x 4"; stamp the sentiment and add the other elements, then I used Stampin' Dimensionals to mount it to card base.
Sentiment is from the June Paper Pumpkin Kit, stamped in Daffodil.  You could use the sentiment from the Cute Fruit set, equally well:  "wishing you a slice of happiness"
Jar image: stamped with Seaside Spray ink onto white, punched out with the coordinating punch.
The straw in the Jar of Flowers set is stamped in Daffodil.  Stamp it twice, once on the jar, once on a scrap of white & fussy cut the straw from the scrap.  Adhere it first to the card, the adhere the jar, lining up the straws.  This makes it look like the straw is in the jar.
Stamp the citrus fruits from Cute Fruit set in daffodil delight (lemons), pumpkin (oranges), and granny apple green & old olive (lime).  I punched these with a 3/4" circle punch.
